Not sure if it's one thing or several things but the image just doesn't feel right.

Anyone have any idea of what the problem could be?

Hi, the first thing that grabs me is the 'cut-out' nature of your masking or whatever technique you have used. The surreal nature of the desert, the sky and the range, mixed with plane, minus the perspective issues and grain/texture differences.

Look again. Where is that smoke coming from?

Besides from what thehermit already mentioned...
Shadows. If you want objects to look realistic and in the actual same photo you need them to interact with each other, having one object cast a shadow on the other one (keeping all light sources in mind) is an easy way of doing this.

Yeah, it's all cut out. Even the smoke has a hard edge to it. Also, with a camera, if the front of the plane is in focus, the tail end would be blurry (soft aperture). Then the shadows are another issue. The sand is too flat.
