try something like this.

1. Get a picture of some coals that you want to use. Call this layer Fire
2. Duplicate the layer, and call this layer Coal.

The Coal layer should be over the Fire lay ...

The Setup:

You have all seen an atlas that has a Terrain Mapkey such as
Shade -100 to -500 feet
Shade - 0 to -100 feet
Shade - 1 to 500 feet
Shade - 500 to 1000 feet
Shade - 1000 to 1500 feet ...

I found the drop-down menu on the Paint Bucket toolbar (Foreground / Pattern), that I had missed. I had seen it before, but had forgotten where it was.

Now to find the patterns!
