PS 7 freezes when using "unsharp mask".

I've been using PS for years and never encountered this problem. I can using any enhancement tools and filters and it works just fine. However, when I try to use the unsharp mask, A small empty box replaces the cursor and the entire program freezes.

I reinstalled the progam and the same problem occurs. I'm using PS 7 on a PC with Windows XP.

Any suggestions?
