I've been trying to correct a picture for a friend but can't seem to get it right. He said he wants his face to be less blown out on the left side, along with his arm/hand. I've messed with a bunch of features, such as shadows, brightness/contrast, exposure, vibrance, black and white and a couple others. I'm still new to the whole world of Photoshop so this has been a challenge. I read some blogs about this stuff and tried to added in a high contrast filter. I know the tools, but not fully how to apply them. If anyone can help with some advice that would be superb!
Thanks |

Welcome to the forum moonxandxback.
Do you have a RAW image of the photo? It's your best bet to fix the blown highlights, if you can get it, do; if not don't despair, but the fixes won't be as 'convincing'.
Without the RAW my instinct says, shoot again. Unless there is some imperative that you can't do so.
In short the problem is that the highlights/blown out areas have no information in them as they are just white, it's not like we can recover no information. To recover them naturally we need to take some info, preferably from the RAW but otherwise by some other means. _________________ If life serves you lemons, make lemonade! |

Thank you for the advice! I cannot get a hold of the RAW file, unfortunately. Is there another way to repair the photo without shooting again? |

Unfortunately with blown highlights and crushed shadows you can only do so much.
Luminosity masking is your friend with high contrast images.
Duplicate the image layer, then desaturate and invert it.
Leave this layer on top and change its blend mode to soft light.
This will make the dark parts brighter and the bright parts darker.
Finish it off by using the Gaussian blur filter on the soft light layer to bring back image detail. |

Or this lasso the right side of the face transform/horizontal fit it to the left side lower opacity do the same with the arm using what you can a bit of warping and liquify... _________________ Lee |
