I think you'll have a job finding version 3.0, you could try contacting Adobe and explaining, they might offer you elements instead (if you still have the serial no etc from your old version) or you could contact your scanner makers, again they may be willing to send you a new cd.

There are a few free photo programs around Gimp, is one (something like photoshop I'm told) but it may be complicated to use. Infranview is another simpler free one (quite good) XN view is another easy one to use and again will do all the usual basics. There are more around search google for free photo editing software. I would go to your manufacturers website and check for updated drivers for your scanner. I had the same problem, had a scanner that worked on windows 98SE, but was useless when I upgraded to Win XP. I downloaded the latest drivers for the scanner, and had no problems scanning. Now, your old photoshop CD is a different story-->that might not work on Win XP. And since it's a program, and not a piece of hardware, you might be stuck with it. If you can't get photoshop 3 to work, then I'd go with what swanseamale47 said and try contacting Adobe.

You can Upgrade from Adobe’s PhotoDeluxe Home Edition to Photoshop Elements 4.0 for $70 (download) or $80 (CD-ROM) USD.

PS Elements is vastly superior to what you are looking to replace. And a fraction the cost of the standard Photoshop application.
