Hi,
I need some advice on the best way of creating an image from bits of other images.
For example, I want to create a person by using legs from one image, the body from another, the head from another etc etc
what is the best way to do this? |

I am completely new to Photoshop so was just looking for some general suggestions of where to start really.
I basically want to create an new image from bits of different ones so that the final image will be of them all - I only used the person as an example but it could be a car with the wheels of a tractor and the propellers of a helicopter fixed to the roof so any image would do for practice.
Do I need to use layers? I tried copying the images into a new worksheet but didn't really work as I expected it to
I am off work for a few weeks now after an operation so will have more time to play and practice. |

Best thing you can do when you want to start getting into Photoshop is setting a goal for yourself and a direction in which you want to go with ps. Well the direction seems set by your post into photomanipulation and the goal could be something like being able to make a realistic photomanipulation without the use of any tutorial wihin a month.
You'll have to learn some general basic techniques like:
Removing backgrounds/ extracting
Tools and layers
Masking etc
Alls of which can be easily found on eg Youtube searching for photoshop basic techniques or something alike.
Then you'll have to master some techniques of importance to the direction you want to go with photoshop. In the case of photomanipulation it comes down to a few things:
Matching lightning (shadows)
Matching colour
Matching contrast
Matching perspective
I highly recommend to watch some video tutorials on all of those and to follow along with them.
When you've followed along the tutorials you should have somewhat knowledge on those techniques and it is time to try to put them to use.
Come up with an idea for a simple manipulation - no reason to throw yourself into deep seas right from the start. Lets say a background on which you want a giant snake to strike at a little girl.
Go to a stock website - or even better use photos of our own - and find a background uou can use, a photo of a girl and a photo of an attacking snake.
Good examples could be sxc.hu or deviantart or istockphoto etc etc
Now load the stocks into photoshop and start cutting out the snake and girl an putting them on new layers with the background. Then compose the image as you want it to be and use the techniques you have learned to match colour lightning contrast and perspective. Voila and done.
Going further you will be able to increase to complexity of your manipulations by using more stocks or creating the whole lightning by yourself or building people from different body parts (which is exactly the same as using more stocks).
Let me know if this was useful for ya _________________ Bart J.A.H. de Brouwer |
