I have been trying UN successfully for the past week to crop (magnetic lasso) a picture of my dogs head and move it to Greeting Card. I can get the head outlined and actually move it to the card, but when I move it there is a white background behind his head. I am trying to get just the head without the white background. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong and how to make this work?

Need to see the image and also the background of the greeting card.

Actually, I am not sure how to find that out either! There is just TOO MUCH to learn!!! ARRGH! I appreciate ANY advice that I can get here though, because I have been banging my head too long! I have also tried to move the dogs head around in PS also and keep getting that background with it. I KNOW there is a way to just have the head move alone without the background, someone please help before I bang my head one too many times!!!

Well, the first step in guiding you through the problem is getting more information from you.
First, upload the photo of the dog to http://www.tinypic.com/ and post it here. Once it is uploaded, the site will have a link in a text box under the heading "IMG Code for Forums and Message Boards". Paste that text into your reply.
By seeing the image, the folks here can point you in the best direction for selecting (cutting out) your dog.
After you have him "cut out", it will have to be saved in a format that your greeting card (GC) program can handle. I know nothing about these types of programs. However, typically, one can go to the "Open" dialog. Near the bottom there is generally a "Files of type" pulldown. Look in there for jpg, gif or possibly png. If looking in the "Open" dialog doesn't work, look in the "Save as" dialog or possibly "Import". And if all else fails, consult the developers website.
My reasoning behind knowing what format you can use is simple. If the GC program can handle gif or png files, then you can import your image from photoshop with a transparent background. Otherwise, if only jpeg files can be used, you'll have to add your background in photoshop before importing.

Hi unless i am misunderstanding your problem, just double click on the background in the layers palette, this creates a new layer & will give you a transparent background when you move your image.

Hi! Thanks for your support. I know the GC will accept png and tiff, however when I click 'save as' with just the dogs head cut out of the pic, it will save to the desk top then when it goes into GC there will be a border behind him as if it is sitting on another layer. Actually it is this way on the desktop too. (so it's not a GC issue) It appears as though it is transparent in PS (it has the gray scale behind it) and I am able to move it around in PS, but I don't understand why when I save it there is a background.?? I am so hard headed which is a good thing or I would be crazy by now!!lol
I will try to up load the pic and I appreciate ANY more advice, because I can't stop now!

Hide any layers you dont want visible and then go to File>Save for Web and Devices. In that dialog window, choose png-24 from the preset pulldown and make sure the transparency box is checked.
Open your GC program and import it to see if it works like you want.

Thanks for the quick reply, I tried it and it and That still gives me a white 'background'!! ARRGH! very frustrating!
any other thoughts???
