Often, while using the polygonal lasso to trace around an image in a photo that I want to edit, I get a "whiteout" - the image I'm tracing in goes white and I have to hit the ESC key to get the image back, and I have to re-trace all over again. Why is this happening and how can I fix/prevent it?

I'm using photoshop CS3.

Are you sure you're using the Polygonal Lasso tool? That sounds like the Pen tool set to Shape Layers and a foreground color of white.
