i want to trace an object without selecting its pixels and i want to enlarge it and then do a color overlay. i tried with the pen tool but it looked bad. is there a way to use the magic wand or something?

If all you are needing is a black outing of an image there are certain filters that will do this for you. Alpha Works is the one I am thinking of.
