select what you want to duplicate, and just past and copy, you'll get a new layer with your selection on it.

So you're working with different images and you want to put a part of one on another?

Select the part you want and hit ctrl+C. Go to the image where it has to go in and hit ctrl+V, it will be put on a new layer in that image.

It's only when you change the desaturation that the color will change.
