I'm trying to create some realistic glass tube-like objects, but I
can't seem to get it right. I've been going by the rules set in this
tutorial among others to create one, http://www.phong.com/tutorials/glass/

but the main problem i've run into is that if the background is clouds,
or something that doesn't have a lot of definition and color
variation, it really looks nothing like glass. Any ideas anybody?

There's several ways you can achieve a glass effect. Phong is a very old website so that tutorial may be a bit out of date, but there are plenty of other that you can find. A good website would be www.good-tutorials.com.

The way that I would make a glass effect however, would be to make white text and lower it to the opacity that you want, which represents the thickness of the glass. I would then copy the background and skew the perspective a bit, then blur it. Then copy the area of the background that the text overlaps and paste it back on a new layer, and delete the copied background. Add some text effects to the text you made until your happy with the result.

This is all 100% straight from my head so it may not look right at first, but with some time and work I'm sure you can make it look good.
