Hello all, I am currently attending college and one of the classes I am taking within my graphic communications major is Digital Imaging. This class deals primarily with using Photoshop and digital photography. One of the projects we were assigned this semester is to create a Giclée Print from a black and white photo. We were to get the photo, scan it in on the computer, and then apply filters so that we can later print it on a canvas like material to make it look like a painting.

I was given basic steps to follow for creating a painting like effect in Photoshop, but I am not really thrilled about what I have so far. I've tried alot of different things and haven't really had any success yet, and was wondering if someone here could recommend some steps or techniques I could do to make my print awesome. If I do well enough my project will be entered into some contests (unsure of yet) or at least guarentee me a good grade :).

My photo was originally black and white, and my professor said it would be challenging to go back through and add color to the picture since it was taken in the 50s or 60s. I went back and added color manually and got something a little funky, http://img227.imageshack.us/i/photocolorweb.jpg/ , sorry for the huge image and file size my print is going to be fairly large. I then added some basic filter effects and got this which looks ok but nothing amazing imo, http://img263.imageshack.us/i/photowfiltersweb.jpg/ . I didn't really do a whole lot, I am more over looking for some direction on where to go to achieve a more genuine painting look. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try playing with the Dry Brush filter in Photoshop.

What size do you plan on making the giclee? I print on canvas all the time.

I think we have a press that can go up to 24x24? I think mine is a bit less than that though.
