Whenever I try to create a new document from which to work, I get the topic header error:

"Could not create a new document because of program error."

Has anyone else ever encountered this problem? If so, what did you do to fix? I have re'installed, trashed preferences, ran disk doctor, etc...nothing has helped.

Of course, I may have missed some preferences that need to be trashed, but I checked all libraries.

I am using P'shop 7.0, in Mac OSX Panther, and only encountered this problem upon installing a scanner driver (which I have removed/trashed).

This is extremely weird, and frustrating.

Thanks in advance!

Same problem with PhotoShop CS on Panther 10.3.7. Started right after a crash in Quark Xpress 6.5. Quark does not seem to be suffering, but I cannot create a new Photoshop file, or open some (not all) image files in Photoshop. Also trashed Photoshop and some other preferences, reinstalled Photoshop, repaired disk and disk permissions.

Here is some of the crash log from an attempt to open a file:

Command: Adobe Photoshop CS
Path: /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS/Adobe Photoshop
CS.app/Contents/MacOSClassic/Adobe Photoshop CS
Version: 8.0 (8.0x119) (8.0)

This is on a G4 that is fairly stable, with 30GB+ free disk space, 768MB RAM.

Thanks,

With OSX you need to repair permissions BEFORE and AFTER installing any new software.

Also, if you are in the UK, try setting your time-zone to London.

Maybe involves trashing one of the .plist preferences…

If you can’t track it down here, try posting problem in the Adobe Photoshop Mac Forum: http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html

and another idea-
If you are running Norton Anti Virus, stop. Disable and delete. NAV has caused lots of (irreparable) problems with PS files. And, with OSX, ya really don’t need it.

There is a poster in another forum suggeting this particular error message is related to being online when trying to create a new document. Can either of you verify that?

The resolution of the problems was had by creating a new user account and moving all data files to it. Simply reinstalling applications did not fix anything, and recreating preference files was of course not helping. A corrupted user account can cause some strange, and difficult to troubleshoot issues.

As far as "being online when trying to create a new document," it did not seem to be a factor. This system is connected to the Internet via Cable Modem and Earthlink is the ISP. Running the apps without Safari or an e-mail client running did not change the results.

I did remove Norton AntiVirus (V9.02) from the system, as several sources point to its negative impact on OS X.

Thanks for the assistance, cbadland. The Adobe forums had some clues that lead me to try a new user account.
