Hi I'm new to photoshop and trying to add colour to scanned drawings. I'm using the colour picker but 99.9% of the colours I pick say " out of gamut for printing" as I wish to print my drawings I am left with only a couple of dark and ugly choices. Why is this, am I doing something wrong, I would have thought I would have more choices of colours. Help.

Hey Tiffany,

Have you got your colour picker set to Lab values? On the right hand side of the picker make sure that the H inside the HSB group is checked.

Hope this helps

Maybe it's something to do with your colour settings? Go to the Edit menu and choose Colour Settings and look at how your RGB and CMYK profiles are set up. Also, do you know what colour mode, bit depth etc you scanned the image at? Feel free to email me the file and I'll take a look.

Hope this helps

Hi Matt,

Thank you again for your suggestions. Settings are as follows: Nth American general purpose 2. Working spaces: RGB- sRGB IEC61966-2.1, CMYK- U.S Web coated (swop) v.2. Colour management policies: RGB Preserve embedded profiles (same for CMYK) In Mode menu RGB colour is ticked as is 8bits / channel. Sorry for the waffling but just trying to describe everything as my pictures are all too large to attach.

Thx again,

Tiff

Well everything seems fine there.

Open a new document and create a red to black gradient across the image. Then use the eyedropper and the colour palette to test if you get the same message?

Let me know how you get on?

Hey there!

Select the gradient tool, and then change the forground colour to red and the background colour to black. Now click in the gradient swatch (at the top of the document) and choose what is usually the first preset - foreground to background. Click OK and now drag with the tool inside the open image.

Hope that helps

Hi Matt,

What am I supposed to do after I've applied the gradient? I applied it then didn't know what to do with it so undid it and the colours are still the same. Is there a step I've missed after applying the gradient?

Thx Tiffany
