I'm using CS2, and I added a layer mask to an image. Now, when I select brush tool, and the color as black, and then paint on the layer mask, it doesn't paint the layer mask black, but rather deletes the image underneath... When I click on the original image, as you can see it is still there, but I cant see the deleted area... Attached a pic of the problem....

Make sure you have a layer below the mask layer visible, as it stands right now everything under the mask layer is turned off...which would show up as a blank background.
Click the eye on the second or background layer.
